September 2020

September was a crazy month! On Sept 5 we went to the splash pad, and then 3 days later on Sept 8 we had a HUGE windstorm! Tons of trees and tree branches fell, the power was out at our house for 3 days, and we lost all the food in our fridge and freezer. Matt, the kids, and I spent a few nights all sleeping together in the living room with the fire going to keep warm. It was pretty frustrating that our power was out for so long, but I knew we were not the only ones and that the power company was working as hard as they could to get everyone's power back on. Matt's parents were still staying with us and they were able to use our generator to keep their fridge on, use the microwave, and keep our big freezer in the garage cold. I didn't work the first day (Tues), I went into the office the next day, and then I worked at my parents house who got power back before us on Thursday. We finally got power back on Thursday evening, but then it went out again around 10am on Friday for 1-1.5 hours. I was so nervous it was going to stay off again for a long time and I had just bought more food from the store the night before and didn't want it to all go bad, too. Luckily, it came back on and stayed on after that. I couldn't believe what destruction this wind storm caused. Everywhere we drove around town was just a mess of trees, branches, and debris. Matt's Dad and Emily and her kids were the biggest help in cleaning up our yard! When I came home from work on Wednesday, I couldn't believe how much work they had done for us to clean up our yard! Such an act of service and love! It was really nice to see everyone around the community helping each other out. The city opened several parking lots to use as dump sites for all of the debris and it was crazy to see how filled these parking lots got. After a few weeks, mostly everything was cleaned up, but there is still a lot of work and home repairs that need to be done. We need a new fence and a new roof from the damage (well the roof probably already needed to be replaced), but we'll wait a bit to do those repairs.

Matt's Mom thought the boys would like to see the big trees that came down at the Bountiful cemetery. They were huge!

About a week later, we went on a hike up Muller Park Canyon. The trail had been cleared of the trees and branches, but there was still a lot to see along the path.

Deacon and Livy were able to play on a co-ed soccer team for the Fall 2020 season. They had a great coach for this team, Alan, and some fun teammates. They decided to be called the Golden Eagles. They had a practice every Monday and a game every Wednesday for 8 weeks. I helped as an Assistant Coach at the practices and ended up having to coach the last game of the season, which was a lot harder than it looks. I think for the most part the kids had a fun time, but there were times when Deacon didn't want to play. I hope he will find a love of sports in his own time and won't give up on it yet.

Due to COVID, we couldn't hand out treats after the games to the kids. The coach decided to have a kids vs. parents soccer game and root beer float party the week after the last game. The kids had a lot of fun at this and I think it was a great way to end the season. I'm hoping Deacon will want to play again in the Spring and can get the same coach.
