With the COVID restrictions, I was hoping we would still be able to do some "normal" Halloween activities this year, especially since my kids love Halloween so much. Luckily, I feel like we were still able to do plenty of activities and have a good Halloween. We were even able to still go trick-or-treating, as long as a mask was worn. There were several homes in the neighborhood that decided not to participate and hand out candy, but plenty of other households did participate. One lady handed out candy with one of those big claws to keep a distance between herself and the kids. All in all, I think the kids had a fun Halloween and a fun October.
Deacon loves orange chicken right now. It's good he gets it at school at least once a month. Deacon has been able to go to school 4 days a week (while wearing a mask the whole time), with Friday being a remote learning day. The remote days are hard on us, but it's going much better now than it did when they shut down everything in March/April. He seems to be doing well and is still learning on track. He really likes reading and has discovered a chapter books series he really likes. They are called A to Z mysteries by Ron Roy. I was very surprised when he brought the first mystery book home from his school library. I thought it would be too hard for him, but he is doing great and loves this series. I cant' really get him to read anything else, but I guess that is the trick to reading is to find something you enjoy. Deacon will always say "straight now" instead of "right now." He also adds the word "pitch" to things. I can't think of an example, but I have tried to explain to him that "pitch black" is really the only thing we add the word "pitch" in front of. He loves to draw and really likes the Disney Atlantis and Treasure Planet movies. Treasure, Egypt, Mysteries... Deacon loves these.
Emerson is enjoying preschool. His class was reduced to 10 kids for 2 hours instead of 20 kids for 3 hours this year. Luckily they don't have to wear masks like the older kids. Emerson still doesn't understand the concept of the word "tomorrow." If I tell him we are doing something tomorrow, he will say "after this day," or "after this night." It's good kids learn about the days of the week and calendars in school. I know he'll get it eventually, but it makes me laugh that he won't say "tomorrow." I'm not sure if I noted this earlier, but Emerson always wants to wear long-sleeve shirts. Even in the summer, he still wanted to wear long-sleeves. He would wear shorts, but not t-shirts. Luckily he can start to wear them again in the Fall. He sings A LOT to himself when he plays. I love it! He is getting so good at playing by himself and will hum and sing little songs all the time. He really likes the Disney Brother Bear movies right now.
Mandy found out about a "Haunted Forest" from someone at her work that we went to on Friday, October 9. They had a spooky forest that we walked through and then donuts and hot chocolate in a big backyard afterwards. It turned out to be pretty cool. It was just done at someone's home on Farmington in a forest in their backyard. When we first walked in, a kid dressed up as a skeleton scared the kids and Emerson kept asking if the person in a costume was a kid. They had some fun areas to walk through and fun, Halloween decorations.
Matt came with us, too, but didn't want to be in the picture.
On October 12, Emerson's preschool went to the Pumpkin Patch on a field trip. They got to go on a tractor ride, play in a hay maze, pick out a pumpkin, and play on other fun things they had. Emerson had a great time!
America First also sponsored some little Halloween goodie bags the kids could pick up. I think they did it 3 Monday's in a row. They had a different theme each week and had some fun characters hand out the bags while we stayed in our cars. One night was Star Wars, one was Witches, and I can't remember what the last one was.
Trying out some Halloween costumes.
Army Guy and Batman
Some of Matt's ducks
Carving Pumpkins. The kids decided to go with a "Minecraft" theme this year.
My parent's ward still had a Truck-or-Treat, so we were able to go to that with them
And Emer was able to still have his Halloween Preschool Program
Halloween Costumes
On Halloween, a new paint studio for kids, Pintsize Picassos, had a free black-light art class for kids. Deacon, Livy, and Emerson all painted a spider/spiderweb Halloween picture. It was a little harder for them than I thought it would be, but it was nice to try it out, especially since Deacon likes drawing and art so much.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
