March - Emerson

Emerson

Emerson had a pretty good March up until the end. Around my birthday, he started to be a bit fussy and wasn't nursing or sleeping very well. We thought he was probably just teething, but decided to get him checked out to make sure it wasn't an ear infection or something else. The doctor said he probably was teething and also had a virus and that we could just treat him with some pain meds. A few days later, he started to get a rash on his face and neck. By the evening, it had spread to his back and chest pretty bad. We didn't know if this was an allergic reaction to something he had eaten or if it had to do with his teething or virus, so Matt took him to the doctor again. The doctor said the rash was probably from the virus that Emerson had and that it didn't hurt or itch him and should go away in a few days. Unfortunately since he hadn't been eating very well still, he had lost about a pound of weight in four days and the doctor wanted us to bring him back in a week to get re-checked. Luckily his rash did go away quickly and he started to eat a bit better, but still wouldn't nurse very well. We were told that teething can mess with nursing sometimes, so we fed him with a bottle more often to make sure he was eating enough. He had his follow up appointment on April 5 and had gained about 6 oz, so that was good to hear. We still haven't seen any teeth pop through yet, but they better hurry up! Teething isn't fun!

On a happier note, Emerson rolled over for the first time also around my birthday from his tummy to his back. I was getting him from his crib after he had woken up from a nap and he was trying to look up at me and rolled over (with some encouragement). I thought that this would be the beginning of him rolling a lot, but nope. He didn't roll over again until April 2. He rolled two times that day from his tummy to his back and hasn't done it again since. I guess he'll just do a few rolls at a time and very gradually learn to roll. What a funny boy we have! He is good at sitting up unsupported and is very good with his hands. He can grab and hold on to toys really well. One funny thing he does is he is always scratching things. I think he's trying to pick them up, but when he's laying down I will hear him scratching the couch or floor or when we are in the car, I can hear him scratching on his seat belt in his car seat. He also likes to grab my hair right now and our faces. When you hold him, he will take both hands and grab your face in them. I think it's pretty cute when he does that. He's also in a screaming/screeching mood. He can yell pretty loud at times.

He turned 7 months in March and is getting so big! His weight is still only in the 50% percentile, but he sure has some cute, chubby "Thunder Thighs!" He doesn't fit in his bassinet anymore, so we did have him sleeping in his crib for a few weeks, but ever since he got sick/started teething, he hasn't been sleeping very well. We are letting him sleep in our bed for now, but I sure hope we can transition him back into his crib soon!

Emerson has now tried squash, bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, pears, sweet peas, and some oatmeal cereal. He makes a sour face and closes his eyes when he eats the fruit, but seems to like it and wants more. The peas and oatmeal are not his favorite, but we've been able to get some down. He also closes his eyes when he can tell i'm about to put his shirt on over his head when I get him dressed in the morning. He's wearing mostly 6-9 month clothes now.

I love that babies can sleep with their arms up above their head:

This is Grandma's secret sleep method for Emerson - she wraps him in his blanket and makes it keep his binkie in and he's out!
